Race Course Review

Myrtle Beach Coastal 5K

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

One of my favorite races, the Myrtle Beach Coastal 5K, is one to add to your list if in the greater Myrtle Beach area during October. The race is promoted and managed by N.S. Promotions & Events.

This race attracts a multi-state participant list every year. Since the race occurs in the fall, the summer crowd is gone and there are hundreds of locals from the SC and NC region, along with a smattering of folks from colder climates.

The course is shaped like a boot with five easy 90 degree turns and one not so easy 180 degree switchback turn around a cone at the 2.6 mile mark. The switchback turn will negatively impact your time. That said, the course is very flat, fully paved, USATF Certified for distance and chip-timed. The timing crew, start and finish and course volunteers are all very professional.

My wife Jackie also participates in this race with me and she greatly appreciates the sinks, soap and hand towels outside the porta-potties – a nice touch that is not generally found at most races. After the race, there is a large party atmosphere with plenty of food and water available.

The medal ceremony is also well done with plenty of age group awards as well as awards for Masters and Grand Masters finishers. The finisher medals and race awards are awesome and I enjoy having them in my collection. There are plenty of hotels in the area and Myrtle Beach is a tourist destination city so try to plan on sticking around for a couple of days if you are from out of town.
